Hi mate,
The misfire sounds like the plug leads breaking down. Is it worse when cold?

This could explain the wear on the dizzy cap and arm as the resistance increasesdown the wire to the plug. It could only be one lead breaking down, but its enough.

I think you're first thing is to change the plugs, leads, cap and arm. If that doesnt sort it, check you have a good strong spark at each plug. This could show up a weak or failing coil.

If the spark is fat it could be fuelling, either a worn pump or blocked filter.

But I thinks its 80% the leads, the cold weather normally makes them more evident, same with batteries. The first cold snap and worn electrics show up.

Check the engine bay earths. I think one of the earths if for the instrument cluster, and a dirty connection effects the dials.

Worst case, check the oil and water for contamination, sniff the header tank, if it smells of exhaust gasses, and/or is mixed with oil, the missfire could be down to a headgasket, and the temp guage could be down to an air lock in the system. Might be worth letting it run and feel the pipes and rad to see if its equally hot all round. Any cool spots indicate an air lock and will need investigating if you havent touched the water system for a while.

Good luck

Stu

Check Dizzy for wear too... Then get some big FAT Silicon leads!

Job done (possibly!)

Change temp send in block over while you're in there too! Probably still on its original and that will be older then you! Laughing

Once you have checked this and done the head gasket, fit the supercharger and slowly bring up to normal running temperature. Then rag the coke out of it. Twisted Evil

Not knocking GSF but their quaility can be patchy, they buyers get in whatever's the best deal at the time, meaning you can buy the same part 3 times and get 3-different manufacturers!

I'd go VAG or OEM for this stuff mate... If you can, get over to Murray's in Hatfield he only sells top-quality OEM stuff and at GSF style prices!

And if the Filters blocking, look at dropping the tank and cleaning it out, or try not to run it down to the red, which will bring up the 20+yrs of crud lurking in the bottom of the tank!

as the title says really

doin 70 on the outside lane and and then BANG the car cuts out and i have to swerve to the lay by (luckily it was near by so landed on the hard shoulder and pushed the car back)

ANYWAY................i was on the way home from work so i was all suited and booted and ZERO tools in the boot!! . I rang Spooner and he came to my rescue (AGAIN!!!!!!!).

FAULT WAS...........the NEW rotor arm we replaced yesterday had broken and kinda blew up the cap (we removed it and it was full of ash/dust!!!) so not happy!!. so we laeft the car there and spooner took me to GSF to get the parts replaced under warranty and they were closed @1.30!! -shame. Luckily Apsley motor spares had em , so spooner took me back to the car and fitted them..............NOW all fixed !!!

Once again MR spoon , U R AMAZING THANK U SO MUCH I OWE U LOTS OF BEER!! (or ur missus LOADS of flowers !!)

Well she's now officially off the road and the work can begin to rectify all the niggly problems.

work will start after christmas, i'm hoping to get it ready for the new show season but 'who knows' u never know with these old bangers it could chuck up all kind of nasty surprises!!!!

engine and gearbox are solid so i've got no worries about that side of it - its just mainly bodywork issues!!!

-it looks very sad sitting in my garage - looking all neglected! and unwashed!

O.K so..................

rear screen removed to gain access to bulkhead (and the seal was leaking)

Then the rear bulkhead was removed (for rollcage access) - this has now been tidied up so no jagged edges and the remainders of the parcel shelf are now gone

Front end off to remove A/C

I kid you not .....the compressor weighed about 6-7 KG's!!!! my poor engine- i've prob gained 50hp!!!!

When removing front i broke the Radiator!!!! DOH!!!!!!! - was a bit rotten anyway

so currently looks like this!!!

SO goin to get a new rad next month and start tidying up stuff with a lick of orange paint!!!!.........i've got A LONG way to go yet ...................will give u another update in a month or so!!
