Split R valve should be turned all the way to the left
Then when the engine is cold (i.e left overnight)
Start the car and leave to get warm ,
then when the valve starts to make a noise turn to the right
Carry on turning to the right until the noise has stopped ,
when all up to normal running temp , turn the top 2 more clicks

I got this From Awesome GTI - dont know if it means anything - i hope it helps
